Why Do Men Go to Church?

People can worship anywhere and at any time, but it is rather significant that man cannot be satisfied with solitary worship.  In his highest joy he usually seeks the companionship of others.  If it is in the enjoyment of a sunset or any of the pleasures of life, man usually seeks some one to whom he can relate his experiences or with whom he can share his joys.  Since man is by nature a social being, it would be surprising if in his higher realm of life he were content to enjoy communion with his Maker in solitude.  Men worship, then, in groups because it is natural for them to do so, but they also worship in groups because they soon have discovered that they can find religious consolation better in this way than when they are alone.  The statement, “Where two or three are gathered together in my name, there I am in the midst of them” (Matt. 18:20), expresses not only a religious fact, but also a psychological and experimental principle.
